AMERICAN AIRLINES: Returning to Australia in October and with First Class from December 2022
Having suspended flights between the USA and Australia back on 4 May 2022 due to a shortage of available suitable aircraft, American Airlines is now scheduling the recommencement of the Los Angeles – Sydney route from 26 October 2022. It looks like this is a positioning flight so it can commence with a Sydney to Los Angeles flight on Saturday 29 October. Flights currently scheduled are:
- AA72 11:15 departure from Sydney – 14-hours to Los Angeles, arriving 07:05 same day
- AA73 23:15 departure from LAX – 15-hours to Sydney, arriving 08:05 two days later
AA will initially deploy a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the route, but from December 16, there is a larger, First Class cabined Boeing 777-300ER scheduled on the route according to ET.

This is another timely reminder to wear your seatbelt when seated. Holding you close to your seat will protect you from the sort of injuries sustained on this flight, when unsecured passengers flew to the ceiling of the aircraft, and then came crashing down once the ‘drop’ ceased.
The hope will be that this is an anomaly – a ‘freak accident’ in casual parlance. If it is a systemic error either mechanical or electronic, then this is a larger concern for the airlines that fly Boeing Dreamliner 787 aircraft. Let’s hope it isn’t. If it is, it will pile on the woes to Boeing’s existing stack.
With American Airlines recommencing flights across the pacific, that gives us nearly a full complement of USA airlines flying to our east coast from the American west coast, including United (Virgin Australia’s new international partner) and Delta non-stop, and Hawaiian via Hawaii.
When American changes to the 777-300ER, their Business cabin will increase from 30 seats on the Dreamliner to 52, plus 8 first class suites for a stylish ride.
