Qantas: self interest – Qantas recruits FREQUENT FLYERS for borders petition

I knew that Qantas Group CEO, Alan Joyce had started a petition to get Australian state and federal governments to open domestic borders, but, I didn’t realise they would be recruiting their more than 10 million (that was back in 2014) frequent flyers to support it. What was I thinking?

Safely‘ open domestic borders

With a kangaroo in the header graphic it reads:

Australians love to travel.

With summer holidays and Christmas just around the corner, many of us can’t wait to visit loved ones and support our regional communities, local businesses and our tourism industry.

But that can only happen if our domestic borders are safely opened again.

The health response to this crisis is our most important priority. And like many Australians we believe a shared framework should determine when our borders open.

If you want to be reunited with loved ones after months of being apart, or to have a holiday in our incredible backyard, please show your support.

The main problem is the word ‘safely’. For most state governments and Premier’s this means, ‘as soon as my health advisors recommend it‘ or more probably, ‘as soon as it is politically advantageous to do so‘ (I’m looking at you Annastacia Palaszczuk of Queensland and Mark McGowan over there on the far side in Western Australia.

For Qantas (especially) and Virgin Australia, it means ‘as soon as possible!”

Possibly against my own self-interest in flying, but definitely for my health, I won’t be signing this, Alan.
