SYDNEY AIRPORT: Pay AU$20 to skip the international security queue

SYDNEY AIRPORT: Pay AU$20 to skip the international security queue

Passengers departing from the T1 International Terminal can now pay AU$20 per person for access to a priority queue at the main security checkpoint, regardless of airline, travel class, or Frequent Flyer status.

The new SYD Fast Track service effectively opens Sydney Airport’s existing Priority Entry pathway to any international passenger prepared to pay for it. Up till now, priority security access was largely the preserve of eligible First and Business Class passengers and premium frequent flyers.

How Sydney Airport Fast Track works

Fast Track is available to passengers departing from T1 and can be booked online in advance or on the day of travel, subject to availability.

After checking in and dropping any bags, passengers head towards the main security screening area and use the Priority Entry walkway on the left-hand side of the departures wall. Show the booking confirmation to staff and join the designated Fast Track queue.

Each traveller needs to be covered by a booking, although multiple passengers can be included in a single transaction. Bookings can also be changed or cancelled before the booked commencement time.

It is fast track, but only up to a point

The important qualification is that your AU$20 buys priority access to the queue before security. It does not buy priority processing at the actual screening point, and it certainly does not include a fast lane through outbound immigration or passport control.

Sydney Airport also makes no guarantee about how quickly you will reach the other side. Fast Track may shorten the queue, but passengers are still advised to allow sufficient time for security and border formalities.

On some mornings at Sydney International, security moves perfectly well while the passport gates beyond it become the real bottleneck.

Is it worth it?

Probably not.

Sydney Airport says 99.8% of international passengers cleared T1 security within 10 minutes during the first quarter of 2026. On those figures, paying AU$20 to save perhaps a few minutes doesn’t make it the travel bargain of the century.

Queues and waiting times at Sydney Airport can be unpredictable. If you are an infrequent traveller or a family juggling a tight schedule, then maybe it’s worth AU$20 for a little more certainty.

Passengers with accessibility needs, reduced mobility or families with young children should also note that Sydney Airport already provides dedicated assistance lanes free of charge. The airport recommends using those facilities rather than paying for Fast Track where appropriate.

AU$20 is not an outrageous price for avoiding a long airport queue. The problem is that Sydney Airport’s own figures suggest the security queue usually isn’t very long.

So this is more like an insurance policy rather than a guaranteed time-saving miracle.

So, if you are an anxious traveller, or have an early lounge appointment involving Champagne, it may be worth the cost.
