QATAR AIRWAYS: Network begins to rebound restoring Australian flights

Qatar Airways is ramping up flights to Australia, restoring capacity after months of disruption caused by Middle East airspace closures.

From May, the Doha-based carrier is progressively returning to a full schedule across Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, with daily flights reinstated after a period of reduced services.

Australian routes return to daily services

Sydney, Melbourne and Perth will all return to daily flights as of May 1, 2026, rebuilding capacity on some of the most important routes between Australia and Europe via Doha.

Brisbane follows shortly after, with four weekly flights resuming from May 16 before stepping up to daily services from June 16. That effectively restores Qatar Airways’ pre-disruption footprint in the Australian market.

A broader global rebuild

The Australian ramp-up sits within a wider network recovery, with Qatar Airways expanding to more than 150 destinations globally. Several European routes are also coming back online, including London Gatwick, Nice, and Mykonos from mid-May, followed by Brussels, Lisbon, and Prague from June.

For Australian travellers, that means more onward options into Europe just as the peak summer season ramps up.

Airspace reopens, but risks remain

The recovery follows the gradual reopening of Qatari airspace after months of disruption tied to the conflict involving Iran, which forced airlines to reroute or cut services across the Gulf.

Flights are now operating through dedicated corridors coordinated with aviation authorities, allowing Qatar Airways to rebuild its schedule.

However, the situation remains fluid, and airlines are still navigating higher fuel costs and potential routing constraints.

What this means for travellers

For Australians heading to Europe, the return of daily Qatar Airways flights is a significant boost. More flights mean more seats, better availability and, in time, some easing of the fare pressure that has built up as capacity was cut.

It also restores one of the most efficient one-stop options to Europe, particularly compared with longer routings via Asia or North America.

You also need to check smarttraveller.gov.au to see what the Australian Government recommends about travelling through Doha. Remember, Government advice that says ‘do not travel’ means your travel insurance may be invalidated. You need to make sure that you are comfortable with the associated risks.

Qatar Airways is back to rebuilding mode in Australia, restoring flights as conditions stabilise.

For travellers, that means more choice and better connectivity — but with global conditions still uncertain, flexibility remains key.
