WEEKLY REVIEW: Sunday 23 August, 2026
Hello travellers,
This week, I have been catching up on life after two short trips in recent weeks to Melbourne and New Zealand. I’ve also got a big trip planned in about a month, so I’ve spent a lot of time planning for that.
I’ll be spending the next few weeks land bound, before I head off again to northern climes.

What happened last week?
There have been further near-miss incidents at Sydney Airport, which will prompt further inquiries.
I finally completed my review of the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver Airport, and despite the exhorbitant price and the remnant ’90’s vibe, I was quite impressed. I’ve updated the assessment of Chinese Airlines which I wrote originally just over 12 months ago.
Qantas launched a domestic sale, which is sometimes a pre-cursor to their Double Status and Points promotion. That also often coincides with the announcement of their half year financial results on 27 August. So get ready. Finally, Malaysian Airlines will bring its A330neos to Brisbane this October.

Next week
Sydney has been getting bursts of spring-like weather, with some sunny twenty-degree-plus days. I can’t wait.
I plan to drop some more Oh Canada! Trip reports, although bear with me, since they take quite a bit of time compared to news update posts.
In the meantime, check that your travel insurance is up to date, keep up your vaccinations, check Smartraveller before international flights, and travel safely.
Until next week . . .
Stephen

CHINESE AIRLINES: 2026 guide to which airline is best
By 2paxfly on 18 Aug 2026 10:20 am
I was really surprised when I looked at the 2PAXfly reader statistics and found that an article about which Chinese Airlines were best was one of 2PAXfly’s most popular posts. That was nearly 18 months ago, so time to update my choices. When I first wrote this guide in January 2025, Chinese airlines were still […]
