NEW ROUTES 2026 #8: Fiji Airways adds Gold Coast flights

You will soon be able to fly direct from the Gold Coast to Fiji. That’s one holiday destination to another. But, the upside is that it may offer an interesting route to the US. From 11 June 2026, Gold Coast travellers can fly direct to Nadi three times weekly, connecting onward to Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth or Vancouver.

Background

I’m doing a series of posts on new routes to and from Australia. Some are actually new routes, and some are new in the sense of having new aircraft, updated interiors, changed frequencies or other innovations. Looks like there will be nine posts in the series. I’ve already covered, and you can read about Turkish Airlines’ soon-to-be nonstop flights between Australia and Europe and Cathay Pacific’s revived route between Adelaide and Hong Kong. You can also read about Korean Air’s new Business Class Suites 2.0 coming to Sydney and Delta One suites from the East Coast to LAX. Even the revival of Malaysian Airlines as a competitive way to head to Europe is covered in this series.

The stopover strategy

This is an interesting way to go to North America. You might want to take the most direct flights over via Fiji, and then break your return with a little island holiday. The Airport in Nadi is on a very human scale, which you might find a little more pleasant than the frantic nature of Sydney or Brisbane airports.

You could even do the reverse, with your break being the start of your holiday. Decompress with some ‘Bulla’ hospitality before heading on to the mayhem that is North America. Australians can even stay in Fiji for weeks without a visa.

Aircraft catch

There, of course, is a catch. The Gold Coast–Nadi sector uses a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with eight business recliner seats. Not awful, but not the best on offer, either.

The long-haul sectors are on an Airbus A350, where in Business Class, you do get lie-flat seats with direct aisle access, a modern entertainment system, and on-demand dining.

It’s not the fastest route to the US. But it might be the least stressful.

Flight schedule and cabins

Flights run three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays using a Boeing 737 Max 8.

  • FJ980 Departs Gold Coast 12:30 arrives Nadi 17:55
  • FJ981 Departs Nadi 09:15, arrives Gold Coast 11:30

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 has 8 seats in Business Class in a 2-2 layout, and 162 in Economy in a 3-3 configuration. Pitch is good at 51″ in Business and 32″ in Economy. Perfectly serviceable on this 3-plus-hour flight.

2PAXfly Takeout

It’s great to see another direct Fiji flight from the East Coast of Australia. It also offers an exotic way to travel to North America. OK, the 737 is not the best way to start a long trip, but you will get some Fijian hospitality along the way.

The option to spend some time on one of Fiji’s many islands, at the right price, is rather tempting.
