- NEW ROUTES 2026 #6: Malaysia Airlines’ A330neo one of the smartest ways to Europe
There was a time when booking Malaysia Airlines to Europe felt like choosing price over style. The airline did the job, but it rarely turned heads. That view may have changed with the arrival of the Airbus A330neo across Australian routes. Commencing its rollout in 2025, with full deployment by mid 2026, Malaysian Airlines might have transformed from a solid backup option into something far more. It certainly will for those travellers who care about value without sacrificing comfort.

Background
I’m doing a series of posts on new routes in and out of Australia. Some are actually new routes, and some are new in the sense of having new aircraft, updated interiors, changed frequencies or other innovations. Looks like there will be nine posts in the series. I’ve already covered, and you can read about Turkish Airlines’ soon-to-be nonstop flights between Australia and Europe and Cathay Pacific’s revived route between Adelaide and Hong Kong. You can also read about Korean Air’s new Business Class Suites 2.0 coming to Sydney and Delta One suites from the East Coast to LAX.

Introduction
Malaysian Airlines has had its ups and downs, but with a rationalisation of its fleet, they stripped out their A380s starting pre-pandemic, and with some rationalisation, you can start viewing Kuala Lumpur as a transit hub again. That’s putting aside the considerable charms of Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia (Orangutangs!) for the time being.
The cabin
The new A330neo features Collins Aerospace Elevation business suites, and yes, they have sliding privacy doors. In 2026, that shouldn’t feel revolutionary, but for Malaysia Airlines, it is.
You also get direct aisle access in every seat, 4K entertainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging and unlimited Wi-Fi. The aircraft itself is quieter and more fuel-efficient, and cabin pressure improvements reduce that long-haul foggy feeling after you land.

Aircraft: Airbus A330-900neo configuration
Malaysia Airlines’ newest A330neo aircraft seats 297 passengers, over two, arguably three classes. That’s 28 in Business Class Suites (with doors), 24 in Economy Extra Legroom seats (premium economy lite?) and 245 in Economy. These aircraft will be rolled out and replace the A330-300s currently servicing Australian routes.
The roll-out of these A330-900neos is scheduled to be complete by mid 2026. This is the way the schedule currently looks.
Sydney – Kuala Lumpur
Flights out of Sydney are gradually transitioning to the A330-900neo, so check your flight details and seat plans to confirm that’s the aircraft you’re travelling on.
- MH122 Departs Sydney 13:15, arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 19:45
- MH123 Departs Kuala Lumpur 08:20, arrives Sydney 19:50
There is seasonally a second overnight service.
Melbourne – Kuala Lumpur
This was Malaysia Airlines launch route for the A330neos back in late 2024. Currently, it has two daily frequencies
- MH128 Departs Melbourne at 00:30, arrives Kuala Lumpur at 05:45
- MH129 Departs Kuala Lumpur at 09:40 arrives in Melbourne at 20:45
The second service leaves earlier in the afternoon. Frequencies of these two services change seasonally.
- MH148 Departs Melbourne at 15:10, arrives Kuala Lumpur 20:25
- MH149 Departs Kuala Lumpur at 22:30, arrives Melbourne 09:25 +1 day
A mix of A330-300 and A330-900neo are tasked to these routes, with the newer aircraft increasingly used.
Adelaide – Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia Airlines has recently expanded Adelaide services.
- MH138 Departs Adelaide 11:00, arrives Kuala Lumpur 15:55
- MH139 Departs Kuala Lumpur at 22:30, arrives Adelaide 08:10 +1 day
The frequency on this flight increased to daily from 2 February 2026, using an A330-900neo.
Perth – Kuala Lumpur
This is usually a daily service. It uses either an A330-300 or the newer A330-900neo
- MH126 Departs Perth 02:30, arrives Kuala Lumpur 08:10
- MH125 Departs Kuala Lumpur at 19:50 arrives Perth 01:25 +1 day
Brisbane – Kuala Lumpur (planned / returning)
Malaysia Airlines previously suspended Brisbane services during restructuring. The airline currently operates around five weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Brisbane, with aircraft upgrades planned as the A330neo fleet grows.
- MH134 Departs Brisbane 08:00, arrives Kuala Lumpur 14:10
- MH133 Departs Kuala Lumpur 20:40, arrives Brisbane 06:10 +1 day

Status Credit earned: Australia to Kuala Lumpur
The ear rate can vary significantly by fare class within each cabin. For example, in Discount Economy, the earn rate can range from 15 to 30 status credits. The lowest rate is 0 for ultra-cheap, deeply discounted fares. In Economy, you can expect 30 to 45 status credits, that’s for standard classes of H, B or Y. Flexible economy earns between 45 and 60.
Turning to Business Class, the typical earn is between 80 and 100 status credits each way.
If you are on a Qantas ticket and flight number, then your earnings will be at the full Qantas rate. If you are on a Malaysian fare, then expect the lower earnings.

2PAXfly Takeout
Malaysia Airlines has quietly rebuilt its premium product, and it is regularly offered at a significant discount, disproportionate (in a good way) to the quality of service.
It’s worth keeping an eye on this carrier’s airfares to see if it will do the job. Also, don’t overlook the stopover opportunities of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia in general. You can do a quick transfer to the island of Saba, and visit a variety of eco-resorts in the rainforrest experiencing nature from pygmy elephants and orangutans to sun bears and amazing birdlife, including hornbills.
