
QANTAS: Aerobridge crashes into A380 causing 21 hour delay to Johannesburg flight

At Sydney Airport, an aerobridge has rammed the engine cowel of a Qantas A380, delays hundreds of passengers for 21 hours on a 14 hour flight to Johannesburg.
Images of the accident, some shot from inside the aircraft show the bottom portion of an airobridge hitting the coweling of one of the A380s four engines.
The affected flight was QF63, which was scheduled for a Sydney departure for South Africa at 09:30 on Saturday 12 July, 2025. The flight was carring about three quarters of its total passenger load of 485 passengers.

No one injured
No one was injured in the incident. The flight is being delayed by 21 hours and is scheduled to depart at 06:45 on Sunday morning.
Qantas is investigating how the aerobridge was able to ram the engine of the A380t.
“We know flight disruptions are frustrating, and we apologise to our customers for the impact to their travel.”

Passengers inconvenienced
Disrupted passengers will be acoomodated overnight by Qantas, and then transported to the rescheduled flight on Sunday.. The new flight should get them to South Africa nearly 24 hours after their original scheduled arrival.

There was a similar incident about a month ago at Brisbane Airport. An aerobridge damaged an aircraft windscreen. I am always a bit surprised how few of these incidents occur. With so many flights across Australian airports, I would have thought such incidents would be more frequent.
No one was injured, fortunately.
Good luck to the delayed passengers. Lets hope that most of them had some kind of travel insurance. If so, they can claim any of the costs associated with the delay, like missed hotel bookings, and internal flights.
