Byron Bay Airprot - The Departures Lounge is now a food court!

Hello travellers,

Byron Bay Airport - updated and expanded, but still weird

I've spent the last week up on the far north New South Wales coast at Byron Bay, catching up with friends, lunching quite a lot, and unfortunately, recovering from a cold.

We had quite a few social events planned, and were compelled to drink more than our fare share of several vintages, not to mention threatening the world wide Billecart reserves. We also spent a delightful lunch at Shelter in Lennox Heads.

Other than the socialising bit, I spent a large amount of time lying down recovering not from hangovers, although they were offered, but from my bout of man-flu.

When we left yesterday, I got to see more of the newly expanded and redesigned Ballina Airport. It is much improved but still weird, and I'm not referring to the sea creature sculptures that used to hang from the ceiling - they have been removed. I'll post a mini-review later this week.

What happened last week?

Quite a few bibs and bobs, but aside from Coronavirus, nothing big time.

Air New Zealand touted a economy bunk beds concept 'Sky Nest', which all my flying friends seem to love.

Virgin Australia announced the closure of their Adelaide Airport Lounge, and the opening of a pop-up for a few weeks before their new lounge opens in April. I, being completely on the ball, thought it was time to do a postumous review based on my visit last year.

Qantas released a nostalgic safety video, which is certainly worth a look by aviation geeks.

What's coming up?

I'm heading back to Adelaide this week, so I will report on any changes at Adelaide Airport.

Sometime this week, I will take you to Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, and whatever the news brings in the airline, travel and hotel industry.

You can catch up on posts from last week below. Until next week . . .

Happy Travels,

Stephen

Review: Vale Virgin Australia Lounge, Adelaide

By 2paxfly on Feb 27, 2020 11:22 am

This post is a little late, as in the late Virgin Australia lounge, Adelaide, since this lounge closed yesterday. I pass through Adelaide Airport very regularly, but mostly travel on Qantas, so this was my first encounter with the Virgin Australia Lounge. Let me put it this way – its a good thing that it […]

Qantas: Nostalgic new safety video for Centenary celebration

By 2paxfly on Feb 26, 2020 05:32 pm

To celebrate the centenary of the airline Qantas has released a nostalgic, patriotic safety video. It’s rather charming, makes me choke up slightly with the ‘still call Australia home’ soundtrack, and amuses with the little ironies of delivering contemporary safety instructions about things that didn’t exist then (e-cigarettes), or aren’t possible now, but were then […]

Air NZ: Bunk Beds for Economy?

By 2paxfly on Feb 26, 2020 10:30 am

Introduction This will never happen, but it is an interesting research direction for Air New Zealand, and one they may well license to others. They have a history of experimentation (Skycouch -where three seats can be made into a wide bed) although some of the execution of their innovations has been questionable. Still hats off […]

Virgin Australia: Adelaide Lounge closure, temporary then new lounge

By 2paxfly on Feb 24, 2020 10:27 am

If you have been to Adelaide in the last 12 months, you will have noticed areas of the airport blocked off, or closed, as they revitalise and expand the end of the airport normally supporting Virgin Australia arrivals and departures. More recently, the middle section which housed the Coopers branded ‘pub’ has closed, with a […]
