A350-1000 chosen for Qantas's Project Sunrise

Hello travellers,

Qantas, the good, the bad, and then Jetstar Strikes

This week saw the beginning of strikes by Jetstar pilots, baggage handlers and other staff, disrupting flights and passengers over this last weekend. More sanctioned strikes and work-to-rule disruptions are scheduled for the coming week.

Gareth Evans, Jetstar CEO made the usual PR  claims that they were doing everything possible to not disrupt patrons (bar actually coming to an agreement with their workers) Meanwhile, Jetstar staff had Worksafe NSW adding weight to their claims that staffing levels were inadequate. Presumably, like where they will end up in their industrial agreement, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

To cap things off the week, Qantas had some hydraulic problems on a flight to Perth, which was turned back to Sydney. Once landed, the cabin started filling with hydraulic fluid mist, and the captain ordered an evacuation, complete with escape slide deployment. More exciting than dangerous. Mind you a few scrapes and minor injuries were gained on exit. I wonder if the luggage was left behind per evacuation instructions?

What happened last week?

The big news was Qantas choosing the A350-1000 for its Project Sunrise. Not really a surprise since Boeing has delayed development of their competing B777X, not to mention that they are not exactly flavour of the month given the 737 Max debacle.

I had a little dive into what is likely to be the fare costs for Project Sunrise routes, given Alan Joyce has told us to expect a 30% premium for these direct flights. I also had a look at the 'blocked' or 'shadow' seat debate for premium flyers, comparing seating charts on Qantas and Expert Flyer websites.

Finally, on the Qantas front, I detailed the hidden perk of being Platinum with Qantas, by requesting a more direct return to Sydney from Bali, once I had redeemed points on a more circuitous route via Melbourne. Oh, and Qantas got even closer to its partners KLM and Air France.

What's coming up?

We shall have to see.

I'm off for my pre-Christmas trip to visit with family in Adelaide and they will be my last flights for 2019.

I have a huge number of trip reports and hotel reviews to catch up on, so look forward to some holiday reading.

You can catch up on posts from last week below. Until next week . . .

Happy Travels,

Jetstar: Outage this weekend – what customers should do

By 2paxfly on Dec 13, 2019 01:34 pm

Jetstar pilots and baggage handlers and ground staff are taking some sanctioned industrial action despite what the Jetstar press release says. The withdrawal of labor will affect about 102 flights (which Jetstar has canceled) over the course of Friday and the weekend. Jetstar is confident that with 80% of flights still operating it will be […]

Qantas: Airbus wins Project Sunrise

By 2paxfly on Dec 13, 2019 01:05 pm

The Airbus A350-1000 has been selected by Qantas for Project Sunrise. Not a big surprise, as Boeing had effectively ceded the win some time ago when it delayed the development of the B777X. But this is no assurance that the overall project will go ahead. The press release states – my emphasis: ‘After detailed evaluation […]

Qantas v Expert Flyer – The blocked/shadow seat mystery

By 2paxfly on Dec 13, 2019 08:00 am

I have just been reading a discussion over at Australian Frequent Flyer about ‘shadow’ seats being granted to high ranking Qantas Frequent Flyers. Amongst the comments was an observation about the difference in seat maps on Qantas and Expert Flyer. Since I have access to both seat maps and a flight coming up next week, […]

Qantas: Project Sunrise – 30% premium to fly direct

By 2paxfly on Dec 12, 2019 10:26 am

Qantas is expecting to be able to charge a 30% Premium on Project Sunrise non-stop fares according to Alan Joyce as reported in Et. That’s quite a premium! Actually, that’s not dissimilar to the premium Qantas currently charges for non-stop flights to London out of Perth, with an East coast start. It depends on what […]

Qantas: gets even closer to KLM and Air France

By 2paxfly on Dec 11, 2019 05:36 pm

Qantas has announced that it is upgrading its codeshare arrangement which started in 2018, to a partnership arrangement with KLM and Air France, so that you can earn and redeem Qantas Frequent Flyer points – but unfortunately, not earn Status Credits. What does this mean? Well, quite a lot. It adds a bunch of European […]

Qantas: the hidden perks of platinum for award redemptions

By 2paxfly on Dec 11, 2019 11:13 am

Earlier this year, before the devaluation of some Qantas frequent flyer redemptions, I booked business class airfares to Denpasar, Bali for May 2020. May/June is when I and the husband start getting itchy feet, or just need a flop and drop so we can catch up on the bedside tower-of-books that remain unread. I could […]
