HOTEL REVIEW: Rocky Hills Retreat, Tasmania – in 8 pictures

My husband and I spent a delightful 3 nights at this unique property about an hour and a half outside of Hobart, Tasmania in late Autumn. It’s Tasmania, so the air was bracing if not yet frigid.

We had spent 4 nights at the Henry James Hotel in Hobart for a conference my husband was attending and wanted some chill-out time away from the city.

Initially we were looking at hideously expensive places like Saffire Freycinet, but then we came across Rocky Hills Retreat, which, OK is self-catering, but a lot cheaper, and still has exquisite views, and best of all, remoteness, peacefulness and privacy.

One of the two massive lounges I spent a good deal of time laying around, consuming books.

The roughly 80 square metres stylish architect-designed house is just for two, with one king-size bed, and two vast lounges with pillows and blankets that you can lounge and cocoon on. It has a basic kitchen, but everything else you need or don’t including 270º views and an outdoor huon pine bathtub.

Bedroom – you can close those curtains which are actually woven metal!

At AU$500 per weeknight and AU$600 per night on weekends, its not outrageous. And they have a freezer full of pre-prepared excellent meals, and a fridge full of breakfast necessities. There’s a bowl of fruit, a bottle of sparkling, and a lit slow combustion fire to greet you.

The design of the house has lots of delightful quirks like this ceiling window in the bathroom, as well as lots of stone and wood installations in the surrounding bushland.

It’s own art studio

I was busy reading up for my university assignments, but next time – I will be spending part of my time up in the old church/church hall, converted into an art studio.
