QANTAS: You can now earn Qantas Frequent Flyer Points when you pay with Afterpay

You will soon be able to earn up to 5,000 Qantas Points when you link your Qantas frequent flyer number to your Afterpay account.

Afterpay, which is a buy-now, pay-later by instalment scheme has had a rapid rise. It now accounts for 15% of online retail purchases in Australia.

“Now our customers can earn Qantas Points on their purchases at no additional cost, just by using Afterpay as
they normally would.”

Anthony Eisen, CEO and Co-founder of Afterpay

How to earn QFF points on Afterpay

If you are new to Afterpay, you can earn 500 points for joining, buy adding your QFF membership number to your Afterapy account. You will earn 1 Qantas Point for each AU$ you spend, up to a total of 5,000 points.

However, if you are already an Afterpay member then the benefits are less. You will need to spend AU$1,000 before you get the points, you don’t get the 500 bonus points, you are limited to a total of 5,000 points, and the offer is only extended to the first 50,000 afterpay customers who link to the Qantas frequent flyer scheme.

How Afterpay works

Retailers have to sign up for Afterpay, so it’s not a facility available at every retailer, whether bricks and mortar, or online. As a customer, you can download the app to your phone, and via that, you make purchases.

Your purchases are divided into 4 fortnightly payments, which if you pay when due, will not incur interest or fees. Of course, if you don’t pay when due, then you will pay extra:

For each order below $40, a maximum of one $10 late fee may be applied per order. For each order of $40 or above, the total of the late fees that may be applied are (sic) capped at 25% of the original order value or $68, whichever is less. See Schedule 1.

Afterpay makes most of its money out of fees charged to retailers to use the service and from late fees it charges customers. For a great explainer article, see this piece on The Conversation website. those fees and late charges, as well as gaining a commission from the retailer

2PAXfly Takeout

This is another timely reminder to wear your seatbelt when seated. Holding you close to your seat will protect you from the sort of injuries sustained on this flight, when unsecured passengers flew to the ceiling of the aircraft, and then came crashing down once the ‘drop’ ceased.

The hope will be that this is an anomaly – a ‘freak accident’ in casual parlance. If it is a systemic error either mechanical or electronic, then this is a larger concern for the airlines that fly Boeing Dreamliner 787 aircraft. Let’s hope it isn’t. If it is, it will pile on the woes to Boeing’s existing stack.

If you intend to use Afterpay, then this is a quick way to earn 500 points plus whatever you spend. If you already use Afterpay, then this is an added benefit of usage and brings the buy-now, pay-later scheme closer to the benefits of some credit cards. However, you can get credit cards that provided a better than one-for-one dollar for points benefit.
